Air Purifier Buying Guide:
What to look for:
- Cost of replacement filters should be justified by the upfront cost of the unit, or the overall proven performance of the air purifier.
- Length of warranty and how easily parts or service can be obtained.
- Ensure that the square footage rating (or size of area) the air purifier can clean is adequate for the space.
- Large amounts of activated charcoal (10-15 pounds or more) if intended purpose was to remove VOC, Chemicals, Odours, or Gasses.
What to look out for:
- Air purifiers using phrases such as ‘Electronic Air Cleaner’ as they contain an ionizer feature that releases ozone. While ozone can be useful in specific situations it is a known trigger for individuals with asthma, allergies, and breathing concerns and should be avoided.
- Air purifiers using UV lights as a means to kill bacteria or mould spores. Typical air purifiers usually do not contain UV lights that are strong enough, or last long enough in the air, to effectively kill certain strains potentially leaving the operator falsely protected.
