The HealthMate Plus + Junior by Austin Air Purifiers is the compact version of the HealthMate Plus HM450. Inside is a unique filtration process that begins with 6.5 pounds of activated carbon and zeolite, which effectively absorbs foul odours and toxic gases.  But it doesn't stop there; the activated carbon is impregnated with Potassium Iodide. This mineral combined with the activated carbon and zeolite, delivering greater capacity for removal of chemical gases, or Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), thus improving relief for people for the severely chemical sensitive and effectiveness in highly contaminated air spaces. It is recommended for people who have heavy air quality problems and those that are chemical sensitive. With 6.5 pounds you can expect it to last 5 years and is even backed by a 5 year warranty.  The particles that are left in the air are then captured by the 30 square meters of HEPA media, which traps 99.97% of all particles that are 0.3 microns in size or larger.

The Junior HealthMate Plus + by Austin Air Purifiers is made for people who are severely sensitive to chemicals and gases.  With a 200 CFM (cubic feet per minute) fan you can expect this air purifier to clean an average size bedroom in about 30 minutes.  Starting from the outside you will notice that these machines are made of solid steel.  The reason for this is Austin Air believes in using as little plastic as possible benefiting those who are sensitive to chemicals and off gassing that can occur from plastic and Styrofoam.  The bodies are painted with a baked on powder coating to ensure that all chemicals and gasses are eliminated throughout the baking process.  That way when you open the box you won't have to wait for your new air purifier to off-gas in your home.  Even the casters and switch knob have been off-gassed in the factory before being installed.  This shows that Austin is a company that truly cares about your well being.

    Overall it's a handy unit, and it is true, you get what you pay for. This unit works well and is very quiet on its lowest setting. Living in an apartment complex I find odors (smoke, cooking, etc.) constantly seeping in through the front door. I just keep this unit near the doorway and crank it on high on bad days and it blocks everything. I've tried less expensive models in the past with much lower success. While not that heavy to move, it would be nice if this model came with wheels and a longer cord. Also, be aware the 5-year filter warranty is pro-rated, that is, you'll get a discount on a new filter if the current one craps out, which is only 10% in years 4 and 5. For most users that won't be an issue, but if you live in a very polluted environment and you're certain the filter will need replacement often, it's something to keep in mind. On the other hand, the mechanical warranty on the unit itself is also 5 years and not pro-rated, and I think that's the likelier thing to break down. Overall a good investment, especially after trying other, cheaper brands.
