Additional Vacuum Tools You May Need

The flexible crevice tool from Miele is excellent for cleaning hard to reach areas
Finding the perfect vacuum for your home can be difficult as there are many options to choose from. This includes upright vacuums, canister vacuums, central vacuums, and stick vacuums. What makes it even harder is that most of them only include the standard attachments, and they won't have all of the tools needed to fully clean your home. If you find a great vacuum but it’s missing a key tool or two, don’t fret – additional tools can be purchased and used with the machine.

While almost every vacuum cleaner will come with some form of a narrow crevice tool designed to get into tight spaces, these rigid plastic tools can be limited. Since they cannot bend they can only clean the areas the entire tool can fit into. On the other hand, a flexible crevice tool is made from a bendable plastic material that allows it to curve around obstacles and clean more thoroughly. They are available in a ‘Fit All’ size and a Miele specific one.

The flexible crevice tool is a handy addition to any vacuum, however there are some places that are too small for even it to clean. For areas like keyboards, stereo equipment, vehicle interiors and dashboards, a mini vacuum cleaner tool set is recommended. Included is an extension hose with smaller diameter opening, and small crevice tools with dusting brushes to get into really tough areas. The ‘Fit All’ version can be found here.

In years past almost all surfaces in a home were carpeted, or had large area rugs covering the flooring. Recently we’ve seen more homes embrace hardwood and other hard floor surfaces like tile, laminate, and vinyl. With these changes we’ve seen new tools become available for cleaning these types of flooring. One of our favourites is the Dust Mop vacuum cleaner attachment. It is ideal for removing the fine dust that can become quite noticeable on dark floors. The cleaner head is attached with Velcro and can be removed and machine washed when needed. View the ‘Fit All’ attachement here.

For cleaning furniture and carpeted stairs most vacuums come with a standard upholstery tool. Their cleaning capabilities are ‘okay’ at best, and usually requires a lot of manual work. For a more in depth clean a mini turbo head can be added to the vacuum. Since they have an agitator (better known as a brush roll or beater bar) they are the best option for cleaning upholstery and carpeted stairs. The spinning brush works to separate the fibres and lift stubborn dirt to the surface so the suction can remove it. Like the other tools there is a ‘Fit All’ size and a Miele size.

More often than not it’s pet hair we are cleaning off of our upholstery, which can be very tricky to clean. If your pet will allow it, you can use pet grooming vacuum attachments to remove the hair and dander before it has a chance to be shed in your home. View the options here.
