Unlike the Persil commonly found in grocery and Big Box stores we only carry the High quality Made In Germany version. Don't suffer in silence when it comes to stains. By using oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, and biodegradable detergents, Peroxy Blaster fights through stains and can be used as a laundry pretreatment.

Food, grease, and limescale can build up in the internal hoses and components of dishwashers resulting in a poor clean. If left unattended this can also shorten the life expectancy of the unit as it needs to work harder than intended. To help combat the sludge many dishwashers recommend monthly, or semimonthly, deep cleaning. What to do with a smelly dishwasher:

Many newer high efficiency (HE) dishwashers use a reservoir pan that collects water inside of the unit. If the dishwasher is not used on a daily basis the pan can develop a dingy, musty, or downright unpleasant odour. Since some households simply do not need to run the dishwasher as much as others the clip on Miele Dishwasher Freshener is our go-to option for eliminating unwanted odours.

Did you know: there are some kitchen items that truly should not be cleaned in the dishwasher. Delicate items should always be washed by hand to prevent accidental damage. These include:

• Wooden or bamboo items (spoons, utensils, plates, bowls, etc.)
• Sharp knives as the dishwasher can dull the blades
• Cast iron pans and cookware
• Handblown glass or hand painted items
• Vacuum sealed travel coffee mugs 
• Yeti and Stanley cups 

From choosing the right vacuum to switching laundry detergents and cleaning products there are several easy ways to improve indoor air quality. Even if individuals in your home are not triggered by certain actives it is still important to ensure you are making the best choice for the air your breathe.

HEPA Filters:

In the most basic terms, HEPA filters (which stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air) are rated to capture 99.97% of particles that are 0.3 microns in diameter, or larger. Most pollens and allergens fall within this size range. When used in a vacuum the HEPA filter acts as a barrier preventing the particles in the air from being released from the machine.

However, not all vacuums are created equal, and not all filtration systems are the same. It is common for a vacuum cleaner to use a HEPA filter, but not use a sealed filtration system. Sealed filtration means that the vacuum is designed in a way that forces all of the air to pass through the bag (if applicable) and filters before being expelled from the vacuum. Without sealed filtration it is possible for air and allergens to escape the machine before ever passing through a filter – causing all of the particles to be recirculated throughout the space. The Miele Compact C2 and Complete C3 canister vacuums are an excellent example of vacuums using a sealed filtration.

Even if your vacuum does not use HEPA filters, it is recommended to change the vacuum filter every 12-18 months. Overtime filters become clogged with microscopic debris, which cannot be removed by simply banging or shaking the filter. A clogged filter is less effective at capturing harmful particles, reduces the suction performance of the machine, and makes the motor work harder causing additional wear and tear to the machine.

If you have a Bagless vacuum, it is extremely important to follow the filter maintenance guidelines of your machine as there is no bag to offer that first round of filtration / protection.

Central Vacuums:

Central vacuums are designed differently than traditional portable vacuum cleaners. The dirt and debris are removed from the floor surface, and then transported via pipes installed inside of the walls to a central location (typically the garage or storage room). Since the debris is collected in a separate space, away from the operator, the chance of exposure to allergens via the exhaust air is almost zero. When individuals are triggered while vacuuming, or shortly after the space has been vacuumed (since the particles can be stirred up and caused to float around the room), central vacuum is strongly recommended to help prevent allergies or asthma symptoms. For added filtration central vacuums can be vented outside, which means any particle that does pass through the filter is expelled outside and not back into the indoor space.

Additionally, since the physical central vacuum is larger it can house a larger and more powerful motor over other styles of vacuums. This leaves floors cleaner and removes more allergens from the surface. Select Beam central vacuum systems offer 5 times stronger suction than upright vacuum cleaners.

Easy Changes to Make:

• Choose fragrance free laundry detergents and cleaning products if individuals in the household are triggered by fragrances. Skin sensitivities are commonly caused by laundry detergent residue left on fabrics.
• Vacuum mattresses regularly and launder sheets and bedding in hot water. This helps to remove dead skin cells which are a food source for dust mites. While dust mites do not cause bites to humans, individuals with allergies can develop rashes, sneezing, and runny noses.
• Humidifiers and dehumidifiers both use filters. Ensure units are emptied of water when not in use and filters cleaned or replaced regularly based upon manufacturers suggestions. Otherwise, bacteria and mould can grow on filter surfaces.
• Improve ventilation in your home. Some of the easier steps include using kitchen and bathroom fans and ensuring that baseboard or heating vents (including air return vents) are free from furniture and other obstructions.
• Vacuum bathrooms exhaust fans, and regularly clean kitchen exhaust fans. Furnace filters need to be replaced every 3-12 months depending on the manufacturer.
• Monitor outdoor air quality in your region with the Health Canada Air Quality Health Index and plan activities accordingly.
• Wear a mask and eye protection while cutting the grass, and immediately change clothes and shower once back indoors.:

Air Purifiers:

Buyer Beware: If you're in the market for an Air Purifier, be advised that Health Canada does not recommend units using electrostatic filtration methods. While they are effective, this type of air purifier can emit ozone into the air, which can be harmful to your lungs and is a known trigger for asthma sufferers.

Our top recommended air purifier for improving indoor air quality is from the Austin Air brand of air purifiers. Their units do not produce ozone, and use manufacturing processes that ensure there's no off gassing of VOC's, which can be a trigger to many individuals with breathing concerns. Be sure to follow the guidelines for filter replacement for your air purifier. (Austin is generally every 5 years)

Central Vacuums in the 21^st Century

Central vacuums, like most product lines, range in quality, performance and overall value across manufacturers. As more and more brands enter the central vacuum market there has been a greater demand for vacuums to be manufactured with compromised quality, performance and reliability especially as many are made for the big box market. Our advice: always speak with the specialists when shopping for a central vacuum system as there is much more behind a central vacuum system then what is posted on a webpage. Dedicated vacuum dealers are best equipped to communicate pros and cons of each system.

What Central Vacuums do we carry?

Motor Quality & Filtration:

Lower priced/entry level central vacuums will almost always be equipped with a motor and filter of lower quality. Filters, even if marked as "HEPA", may not be manufactured to handle the suction created by the machine, thus causing premature wear. Motors chosen for these machines will be too small for the application, but run at a higher RPM by the machine to meet specifications. This greatly reduces the life span of the motor and electrical components of the machine. A central vacuum is an expensive investment no matter what level you purchase at, especially when you factor in variable installation costs. For this reason it's important to see how your central vacuum will be serviced if an issue arises. Many brands, especially ones in big box stores, are not set up to be serviced locally, forcing the customer to contact the manufacturer directly for service. Most of us have grown used to this procedure with so many of our products making this shift, however shipping an entire central vacuum system back to the manufacturer for service/warranty is not a small chore.

Cleaning Hacks to Avoid:

• Avoid using the dishwasher as a catch-all. Yes, dishwashers are convenient, but they can cause damage to many unsuspecting surfaces. Wood cutting boards and serving dishes can warp or crack, the seal on travel coffee mugs can be ruined, and delicate porcelain can be damaged in the hot water of the dishwasher.

• Sweeping non-carpeted surfaces instead of using the vacuum. We are all familiar with the dreaded Dustpan Line and we all know that even with the best sweep job some dirt is being left behind. These small dirt particles and stones can cause scuffs or scratching to the floor surface.

• Using homemade vinegar or bleach cleaning solutions on all surfaces. Being an acid, vinegar can cause etching and cloudiness on granite and marble surfaces. While bleach can cause damage to metal surfaces (like stainless steel appliances or pots and pans) if not diluted properly due to the oxidation process that occurs.

• Not following the directions and proper dosage amount of laundry detergent. Unfortunately, more detergent doesn't always lead to cleaner clothes and can cause poor wash results. The extra suds create a cushion between clothes preventing them from rubbing against each other (which helps in the cleaning process) and causes detergent to become trapped in the fibers as they could not be fully rinsed. Yes, this means actually using the provided measuring cup.

• Vacuuming or shaking out vacuum filters. Now, we're all for maintaining the filtration system in a vacuum but overtime the microscopic pores in filters will become clogged and no amount of vacuuming or shaking will unblock them. Using a vacuum with blocked or clogged filters causes reduced air flow (and reduced cleaning results), plus can cause the motor to overheat and turn off. It is always best to follow the manufacturer recommendations, and keep in mind that most filters need to be replaced every 12-18 months.

Cleaning Tips from the Experts:

• When using microfiber cleaning cloths do not use the same one throughout the house. There should be a dedicated cloth for kitchen counters, a separate one for bathrooms, and additional ones as needed. This prevents cross contamination of germs and bacteria.

• Clean the sink after every use. The kitchen is the heart of the home, and the sink is the heart of the kitchen. Grime and food build up can happen quick, and a good habit to get into is cleaning the sides, bottom, and back of the sink (where the faucet is) on a daily basis. Looking to take it the next step? Handheld steamers, like the Reliable Pronto, blasts through grime and leaves stainless sinks sparkling, plus the steam kills germs and bacteria.

• Let cleaning agents sit for a few moments before scrubbing. Save some of the elbow grease and give cleaning agents the time they need to go to work. Most cleaning products need a few minutes to be the most effective.

• If clutter is a problem, start using the "Put It Away, Not Down" philosophy. Tired of clutter gathering on the table, stairs, or counters? Get into the habit of putting things away once finished using them, instead of just putting them down on a flat surface.
